In Riverton, Virginia, in the 1870's, a truly horrific event occurred: an entire family was found deceased in their home - which had its own haunting clues. Called by the Department of Justice to determine if mass murder occurred, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency gave the case a quick, uncomfortable look over. Less than a day later, they determined that those inside were victims of natural, yet unknown, causes.

Riverton. Virginia. February 7, 1873. Investigative Notes.

George cabin. Family of seven, deceased. Four found in kitchen, two found on porch, one behind cabin. Two elderly, four adult, one child. (steps)

Currently in kitchen. Likely dead for… well, not too long for these four. The others, maybe a few days. Seems all died around or near the same time, in groups. All lying down, natural-like. Like settling down for a nap. Not positioned, all uniquely laying. Pale, cold, stiff. No blood present on scene, no large wounds. No sign of forced entry. One window open. No signs of violence. Home… filthy. Disheveled. Clothes unwashed. Selves unwashed. Unkempt entirely. Abnormal for the West Family. Furniture dusty. Covered in… white dust. Not quite dust, some has a humidity to it. (rubs fingers together) 

Substance found on bodies. On furniture. On the walls… Small scratches there, too. All over the place, small scratches…Lack of food or drink found in cabin. No tableware set out or used. Possible poisoning? Empty glassware, long ago emptied and washed…

Valuables in cabin. Family pet missing.

What is this…? Have you ever seen anything like it?

Maybe some kind of bee? I don’t know. I.. I don’t know.

Structures hanging from ceiling. About 6 inches tall. 4 inches wide. Pale gray. Stuck to the wall. More white substance found here, piled up on floor. Could be of animal origin, some type of cocoon. Could be fungal growth. Could be… Something else. (rustle) Leathery texture. Tears. All empty. Hard to describe smell.

(softly) fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen. 

There’s at least 19 here.

In the early 18th century, there was a family of seven found dead and drained of blood, lying on their cabin floor; they were devoid of wounds aside from numerous insect-like bites on the neck, arms, legs, and abdomen. Their home was empty of food and valuables, but was also coated in thick layers of guano; scratches adorned the walls and large, strange cocoons eerily hung from the ceiling, swaying slightly side to side, barren. A cave located nearby was deemed the culprit － some strange, beastly plague thought to reside within. The exact cause of the massacre was never concretely determined, though none lingered long to find it.
